Best Engagement Photos of 2012 | Western Massachusetts Wedding Photographers

2012 was a year filled with a lot of ups and downs for me. I realized majority of my ‘ups’ were spent with people I care about, creating art, or exploring the world; three of my favorite things to do. I adore photographing engagements with my couples, because I’m able to connect, create, and explore all at the same time. I am reminded of the raw beauty in love and relationships. Have you ever witnessed a couple that is truly, madly, deeply in love? It’s pretty magical. Below are a few of my favorite photos from last year. I’m ready for more playful and sweet moments in 2013!

I am reminded everyday how small our world truly is… but back to that thought in a moment.

When I was a little girl I grew up in England and lived there for 7 years. According to my parents, my sister and I used to have adorable British accents but lost them over time once we returned to the States. Big Ben used to be one of my favorite places to see; I was in awe of its size and detail. I would draw pictures of it often (years before I discovered my love for painting and photography). I’ve returned to England several times as an adult, and remember noticing how small Big Ben looked compared to how I remembered it. Funny, how our perspective shifts.

One of my favorite memories of England is captured in the photo above. My sister’s class was going to the parade in front of the palace to see the Queen and Prince Charles. I was too young for school at the time, and my parents could see the disappointment on my face at the thought of missing the prince, so they decided to make a trip down there. Somehow, Prince Charles stopped to see me; I gave him a dozen pink carnations we picked out, he gave me a kiss on my cheek in return. [I can honestly say I've been kissed by a prince!] My dad squatted underneath the ropes to take this photo, and he claims seconds after he took this photo he was escorted back to the other side with the crowd. Surely, security in the 80′s was more lax than it is now.

I adore this photo. It reminds me of this moment. It reminds me of my family. It reminds me of England, and the 80′s with my Snoopy socks. Because of this photo, I can remember how I felt in that moment… almost 27 years later. I’m thankful my dad has a ‘good eye’ and the guts to do what it takes to document and preserve a moment through his lens. It must run in the family.

I was reminded of this moment with Prince Charles in England, because a bride who contacted me this week was also in the Air Force and stationed at Lakenheath Air Force Base; several of her bridesmaids were stationed there as well. I was reminded why I adore photographing weddings. I’m able to document precious moments in people’s lives, moments that significantly impact their life, moments that will forever be part of their legacy; moments turned into photographs that will be cherished years later. In a small way, the same way I cherish this photograph. It is indeed a small world.

Aqua Turf Club Wedding | Winter Wedding Photos | Amber & Rick

If rain on your wedding day is a sign of good luck, and snow is an omen for prosperity and fertility, then I think Amber and Rick are in for many years of happiness as they were married at Aqua Turf Club in CT the day following Blizzard Nemo. My feeling after spending some time with A&R is that they don’t need any luck, but the gift of snow and Nemo was a lovely one for them (as Nemo has special significance in their family). I had such a great time getting to know A&R, hearing about their visions of shooting with film cameras on their wedding day (Diana cameras with Polaroid digital backs! Love!), and connecting with them over our love of photography. You see, Amber and Rick met during art school and Amber is a professional wedding photographer herself. They wanted their day to be about celebrating their love with their closest family and friends, and they wanted photography to preserve those moments, so their kids could one day spend countless hours reminiscing through their wedding album (the way Amber has done for years with her parents and grandparents photos). I’m so honored that they asked me to celebrate with them and artistically document their wedding. Their day was filled with intricate, rustic DIY details that they intentionally dedicated a lot of time to create, and they have one of the sweetest stories behind their rings. Amber’s is custom-made including family heirloom wedding bands (the first time she saw her ring was at the altar!), and Rick’s is a unique wood inlay. Below are a few of my favorites, and the beginning of what I know will be many years filled with more smiles, tears, dancing, snowball fights, and photos!

Avon Old Farms Hotel Wedding | Look Park Engagement | Danielle & Andrew

There are so many sweet and endearing moments on a wedding day, and I find there are always a few specific, unique and intimate moments during each wedding that pull on my heart strings. These are usually the moments where I find the hairs on my arm standing at attention, tears in my eyes welling up, and an overwhelming feeling of awe. It’s an amazing experience to witness two people devoting their lives and love to each other. Danielle and Andrew knew they wanted to pray together prior to their wedding ceremony. They didn’t want to see each other beforehand, so Danielle had a blindfold on-hand, and we found a space in the church where they could be alone. After everyone left the room, Danielle and Andrew held hands, cried, laughed and prayed together. It was such an intimate and touching moment and I was honored to document it for them both. They are such a special couple, and I feel so grateful to have met them, photographed their wedding and to call them friends.

You may remember Danielle and Andrew from their Look Park engagement photos, and now you can see some of my favorites from their wedding day. They were married (with an incredibly sweet tree planting ceremony) at Talcottville Congregational Church in Vernon, CT, and their reception at Avon Old Farms Hotel was a fun night with an incredible fall sunset and a very sweet anniversary dance. Meet Harper… he’s adorable, laid back, 9 years old and loves his parents, Erica and Tara. I met these adorable three souls for Erica and Tara’s fall engagement photos at the Boston Public Gardens. Immediately, I could see how warm and playful they were with each other. Erica and Tara played sports in college (and both favor different teams that happen to have the same colors!). It was important that part of Boston be captured in their engagement photos, so the Boston Public Gardens seemed like the perfect place to document the beginning of this part of their love story. I’m so excited to photographer their wedding at The Villa at East Bridgewater next year. I hope you enjoy a few of my favorites from our time together!

Old Derby Academy Wedding | Hingham Wedding Photographers | Surekha & Thorsten

Surekha and Thorsten’s love story is filled with travel and adventure. While dating, they spent quite a bit of time traveling the world together, and currently live in Germany. They were married at the end of September in Germany, and celebrated with family and friends at the Old Derby Academy in Hingham, MA in October. It was fantastic seeing so many of the people they care about traveling across the world (the farthest being from India), to celebrate their commitment to each other. It was a beautiful, fall day and the rustic and New England charm of the Derby Academy was perfect.

Shutesbury MA Engagement Photos | Shutesbury and Amherst MA Wedding Photographers | Melissa & Will

All of my couples know that I’m a huge romantic at heart. When I first heard Melissa & Will’s love story, I felt goosebumps. Seriously. While I know they can tell the story best, they essentially met when they were much younger but didn’t really connect with each other and start dating until college when a friend re-introduced them. Melissa’s eyes lit up when she shared the story with me. You see, she had written in her journal about liking Will when she was younger… and she still has that page in her journal all these years later. Even if you’re not a romantic, that’s enough to melt anyone’s heart. We spent the afternoon together photographing their engagement session at Will’s parents’ house in Shutesbury, MA. They’ll be having an intimate, backyard wedding in western Massachusetts next summer, and had their first date hiking in the woods behind the house, so we knew it’d be a perfect place to photograph their engagement. They’re a daring couple (as you can see from their climb up and down to the waterfall), playful, very sweet and caring of one another, and so much fun to be around. Oh, and they’re collecting heart rocks for their wedding day and we randomly found one along the stone wall. I think that’s the first time I’ve consciously seen a heart rock before, but I’m sure I’ll see them everywhere now with a huge smile on my face.

Weddings are a time to celebrate the commitment and love of two people, and also a time to truly connect with the friends and family that surround the couple in love. I’ve joked that once I photograph a couples’ wedding they’re part of the CYN PHOTO family. I feel so honored and excited to extend my family with Caitlin and Brad. I have a special connection with C&B, as I photographed friends of theirs last year (you may remember Jen & JJ’s Trash the Dress session). The year before Jen & JJ’s wedding, I photographed friends of theirs: Caitlin and Chad. Such a great group of loving, laid back, genuine, and amazing people! I love not only getting to know my couples, but also seeing familiar faces on their wedding day. Caitlin and Brad’s wedding was on a perfect Fall day in New England at the Nantasket Beach Resort in Hull, MA. It was very touching to see them both tear up throughout the day and party late into the night. Here’s a peek at a few of my favorites from their day…

Jason and Leigh were engaged in Colonial Williamsburg. They are huge history buffs with a love of anything from the Georgian/Regency period. Leigh and Jason spent some time apart during their engagement, due to Jason’s deployment, and I was excited to photograph the two of them together again during their Mashpee engagement session. Since they had a long engagement, they were able to put a lot of thought and planning into making their day a true reflection of their love and interests. Jason and Leigh were married at St Michael’s Episcopal Church followed by their reception at the Milton Hoosic Club. Leigh spent almost a year scouring antique shops, flea markets, yard sales and Ebay to find unique, historical plates for each table setting at their reception. She also carried a clutch purse made of fabric from her grandmother’s and aunt’s wedding dresses; such a beautiful reminder of their presence and love. Their day seemed to be a celebration of not only their love for each other, but also of returning to be with one another. Coming together in love, through family heirlooms and historical objects, all reinforced the connections shared. Here’s a peek at the beginning of their own family history:

It feels like I just met Ky and Danny for their Larz Anderson Park engagement photos. It’s amazing how fast time flies. Ky and Danny recently celebrated their outdoor wedding at The Villa at East Bridgewater and Chinese banquet at Empire Garden at the end of September. I’ve mentioned this before, but I adore photographing Chinese tea ceremonies, and it was so sweet to see Ky and Danny surrounded by so many people they love. Ky was a stunning bride with four beautiful dresses (including a mix of both traditional American and Chinese wedding dresses), and their reception was a blast (as Danny and his groomsmen danced a pretty stellar performance to Gangnam Style). I have so many moments I love from their wedding day, but I wanted to share a few of my favorites for now…
